Understanding the 4Cs: Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat Explained
Ask any jeweller what determines a diamond’s quality, and you’ll hear the same four words: Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat. Together, the 4Cs are the international grading standard used to evaluate every diamond, and understanding them is the single most useful thing you can do before buying one. Cut determines brilliance, Colour measures how colourless the stone is, Clarity assesses its internal and surface characteristics, and Carat measures weight. Together, they determine both a diamond’s beauty and its price.
“The most beautiful diamond isn’t the one with the highest grades; it’s the one that feels unmistakably yours.”
Cut
Cut refers to how precisely a diamond’s facets are proportioned and angled to reflect light, and it’s widely considered the most important of the 4Cs. Even a diamond with excellent colour and clarity will look dull if it’s poorly cut, since brilliance depends entirely on how well the stone has been shaped to work with light rather than against it. Grades typically range from Excellent to Poor, with Excellent and Very Good offering the best visible sparkle.
Colour
Colour is graded on a scale from D, which is completely colourless, to Z, which carries a light yellow or brown tint. The closer to D, the rarer and more valuable the diamond, though near-colourless grades between G and H offer excellent value, since the difference at that range is nearly invisible to the naked eye.
Clarity
Clarity measures the presence of internal inclusions or surface blemishes, graded from Flawless at the top of the scale down to Included at the bottom. Most inclusions are microscopic and invisible without 10x magnification, which is why a Very Slightly Included grade offers a beautifully clean look at a considerably more accessible price than a Flawless stone.
Carat
Carat measures a diamond’s weight, not its size. One carat equals 0.2 grams. Two diamonds of identical carat weight can look quite different in size depending on their cut and shape, which is why carat should never be judged in isolation from the other three Cs.
Which C Should You Prioritise on a Budget?
If budget is a factor, prioritise cutting first, since it has the greatest visible impact on brilliance. Colour and clarity can often be stepped down slightly to near-colourless or VS grades, with no noticeable difference to the eye, freeing up budget for a better cut or a larger carat weight. A well-cut diamond at G colour and VS2 clarity will almost always outshine a poorly cut diamond with higher colour and clarity grades, so when in doubt, prioritise the cut above all else.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Focusing only on carat weight while ignoring cut quality, a poorly cut large diamond can look duller than a well-cut smaller one.
- Assuming a higher price always means better quality, always cross-check the actual 4Cs grades on the certificate rather than the price tag alone.
Buying Advice
Always request the IGI or GIA certificate before purchase, and evaluate all 4Cs together rather than any single factor in isolation. At Avyaami, every diamond’s 4Cs are independently verified and clearly listed alongside the product, so you can make a fully informed decision without needing to be a gemologist yourself.
